Summary:

This facilitator's guide provides training information on Project ELIPSS, a staff development program designed to train Head Start staff in strategies for supporting emergent literacy in children from diverse backgrounds in a variety of settings, in strategies for supporting emergent literacy of children possessing special needs, and in the integration of technology to support emergent literacy with all children. The first session describes the six modules of the program, provides a menu of support services, and lists the ideal characteristics of a literacy resource coordinator. Forms are provided to help training participants select, implement, and follow-up on selected emergent literacy strategies. Activities and discussion questions are then provided for the following modules: (1) building a firm foundation for early literacy development; (2) stages in early writing development; (3) developing a literacy-rich environment; (4) making quality children's literature available to every child and selecting appropriate literature; (5) beginning reading through rhymes, songs, poems, and big books; and (6) ongoing assessment of emergent literacy behaviors. Session 2 provides information on the role of the literacy resource coordinator in facilitating change, the change process, developing and using active listening skills, social interaction in diverse settings, characteristics of adult learners, and determining leadership skills.
