This digest summarizes recent research supporting the ability of children to develop into "confident, competent, and caring adults" despite multiple and severe risk factors. The contributions of resilience factors such as social competence, problem-solving skills, critical consciousness, autonomy, and sense of purpose are discussed, and the importance of schools providing caring relationships, high expectations, and opportunities for participation is described.
