Summary:

Focusing on creating community partnerships via collaboration to support the growth and development of children and families, this guide is intended to enhance the knowledge and skills Head Start staff need to be full collaborative partners in community efforts to help families develop, nurture their children, and experience success. Following an introductory section, four modules are presented. Each module details expected outcomes, key concepts, background information, learning activities, and next steps. Handouts are included for each module. Module One, "What is Collaboration?" distinguishes collaboration from the many other ways people work together. Module Two, "Elements of Success," describes elements that contribute to successful collaboration, along with strategies for decision-making and planning effective meetings. Module Three, "Challenges of Collaboration," examines typical collaborative challenges and potential sources of conflict among partners. Module Four, "Practicing the Collaborative Process," presents activities that allow participants to become an active player on a planning team and introduces evaluation and self-assessment tools. The final sections of the guide contain information on continuing professional development and resources.
