Summary:

The statements of knowledge and skills contained in this booklet are based on the central assumption that learners who are deafblind require highly specialized and personalized teaching approaches. The authors acknowledge and accept the Commmon Core of Competencies for Special Education Teachers endorsed by the Council for Exceptional Children in the appendix. However, teachers of learners who are deafblind must have additional specialized competencies in order to provide their students with quality educational opportunities. These Competencies, the outcome of a collaborative process by recognized experts in the field, can be used as a blueprint for course development and field experiences by university personnel preparation programs in deafblindness. The topics addressed are: Deafblindness; Personnel Identity, Relationships and Self-Esteem; Concept Development; Communication; Hearing-Vision; Orientation and Mobility; Environment and Materials; and Professional Issues.
