Summary:

This book aims to help directors of child care programs to find and cultivate the "fire" of passion and imagination within themselves, and to use that fire to inspire the services and programs under their administration. It begins with an introduction to the authors' vision of childcare programs as the new neighborhoods of the next century. The work of the director is described as a triangle, carefully balanced on all sides, incorporating the roles of building and supporting community, coaching and mentoring, and managing and overseeing. Several chapters then offer more details on each of these sides of the triangle separately. The need for self-care and activism is stressed, with stories, strategies, anecdotes and quotes provided toward these ends. An after-word describes a dozen promising programs throughout the United States that reflect the authors' philosophy. Appendices include reproducible materials for planning meetings, licensure self-evaluation, teacher and director evaluation, and curriculum planning.
