Summary:

This factsheet discusses the benefits of having children with disabilities included in general education classrooms, and provides school strategies for making inclusion work. Strategies include: (1) create positive attitudes; (2) reorganize schools by providing special service in regular classrooms and using a variety of teaching methods to improve education to all students; (3) practice good communication; (4) encourage strong leadership; and (5) support teachers and school staff; (6) improve accessibility. Suggestions for parents are provided on how to use a child's IEP to accomplish inclusion, and federal law requirements on placing children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment are reviewed.
