This factsheet for parents of children with disabilities discusses ways parents can communicate effectively with professionals to ensure effective collaboration. Strategies for better communication include: (1)attend all meetings having to do with your child; (2) stay in frequent contact with your child's teachers, doctors, therapists, tutors, coaches or other professionals; (3) share with professionals your ideas about your child and ask them questions about things you don't understand; (4) encourage professionals to contact you regularly to discuss your child's progress; (5) let professionals know how you feel; (6) try to work out disagreements through discussion and compromise; (7) help your child develop a positive attitude toward the programs and professionals with whom he or she is involved; (8) recognize that you are an equal member of any team; (9) during meetings, look directly at the person who is speaking and listen carefully to what they say; (10) make coments in a clear and positive manner; (11) be sure to talk about your child's strengths, interests, and abilities; (12) offer facts to support your point of view; (13) if you don't agree with something that has been said or written, speak up; and (14) understand your rights.
