A major obstacle to the timely delivery of early intervention services is the early and accurate identification of infants and young children who have developmental delays or disorders. Designed to be completed by parents or primary caregivers, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) screening system for children with developmental delays is composed of 19 questionnaires. Each questionnaire contains 30 developmental items that are divided into five areas: communication (e.g., Does your baby make high-pitched squeals?), gross motor (e.g., While on his back, does your baby lift his legs high enough to see his feet?), fine motor (e.g., Does your baby reach for or grasp a toy using both hands at once?), problem solving (e.g., Does your baby often pick up toys and put them in his mouth?), and personal-social (e.g., When in front of a large mirror, does your baby smile or coo at herself?). In addition to a brief English-language introduction to using the ASQ system, the Spanish-language ASQ materials are: (1) 19 color-coded, photocopiable questionnaires for use at 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60 months of age; (2) 19 photocopiable, age-appropriate scoring sheets for each questionnaire; and (3) 1 photocopiable mail-back sheet.

Intended User Audience:
The intended users are service delivery personnel in a variety of EI/ECSE and ECE fields and settings who, in turn, share this information with parents/family members. This material was developed for a broad audience. Information is included in the new edition for specific cultural groups,
primarily Spanish-speaking individuals and individuals from lower
Parents/family members, service delivery personnel, and faculty/trainers representing a variety of EI/ECSE and ECE disciplines (e.g., home visitors, allied health professionals, physical therapy) were involved in the development of this material. A variety of cultural and linguistic groups were represented: Native American, Hawaiian (including several Asian groups), and Hispanic groups. Personnel involved in a program for Spanish-speaking migrant workers translated the material. It was then shared with a variety of different groups in Puerto Rico and other Spanish-speaking areas before a final edit by the publisher.
Parents and service delivery personnel returned surveys. These individuals represented population figures based on the 1980 census. The ASQ has also been through fifteen years of psychometric testing and gathering normative data. Numerous articles describe these efforts. Recent publications in Early Childhood Research Quarterly and the Journal of Pediatric Psychology describe the 1999 edition. (References are available upon request).
To date, approximately 5,000 copies of the first edition of the ASQ have been disseminated throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Several European countries are working on translations. In addition, personnel in New York City are in the process of translating the ASQ into Russian, Arabic, and Punjabi.
