Summary:

This booklet suggests the following 10 principles for fighting against bias crimes and prejudice toward groups and individuals because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or other differences: (1) act against discrimination and prejudice; (2) organize a group of allies from churches, schools, clubs, and other civic sources; (3) support the victims; (4) research the symbols and agendas of hate groups; (5) create an alternative such as holding a unity rally or parade; (6) speak up and help news organizations achieve balance and depth; (7) persuade politicians, business, and community leaders to take a stand against hate; (8) look long range and create a "bias response team"; (9) teach tolerance; and (10) dig deeper by looking into issues that divide us and working against discrimination in housing, employment, and education. Examples of how communities have fought against discrimination and prejudice are provided throughout the booklet.
