Summary:

The guidelines in this document are designed to assist families and service providers with developing Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) for families of children who exhibit characteristics of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), autism, or related disorders. The information in this document is a compilation of a review of research-based programs and models, personal discussions with experts in the field, and an interpretation of the responsibilities of the Connecticut Birth to Three System under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The guidelines address: (1) early identification and diagnosis of individuals with PDD/autism; (2) curriculum strategies used in early childhood programs for young children with PDD/autism; (3) highly supportive teaching environments and generalization strategies; (4) characteristics of controversial or alternative treatments; and (5) steps to preschool transition. The document also reviews strategies and intervention techniques such as embedding teaching strategies or therapies into natural routines, focusing on communication and development of communicative intents, sensory integration, augmentative/alternative communication, and applied behavioral analysis. Questions commonly asked the Birth to Three System by parents of children with PDD/autism are answered in the final section. Appendices include a checklist for autism in toddlers, early indicators for screening, and family information and support resources.
