Summary:

This manual contains eight modules designed to train Head Start staff in strategies for supporting emergent literacy in children from diverse backgrounds and children possessing special needs, and in the integration of technology to support emergent literacy with all children. Specifically, modules address: (1) building a firm foundation for early literacy development, multicultural principles, books and activities for emphasizing speech development, using children's books to develop an awareness of letters and sounds, and activities for supporting children's language development; (2) stages in early writing development, writing ability and development in related areas, suggested lesson plans, using picture books to inspire young writers, and activities for supporting writing development; (3) developing a literacy-rich environment; (4) making quality children's literature available to every child and selecting appropriate literature; (5) beginning reading through rhymes, songs, poems, and big books; (6) ongoing assessment of emergent literacy behaviors; (7) science, math and literacy for young children, basic science concepts, math curriculum, and science; and (8) ways to integrate science, math, and literacy. Reviews of software to promote literacy are included, along with an extensive resources section.
