Transdisciplinary Play Based Intervention. This handbook provides practitioners and parents with principles, guidelines, and practical suggestions for incorporating play and other pleasurable activities into the daily life of young children with special needs. Transdisciplinary Play-Based Intervention (TPBI)is designed to involve children from infancy to 6 years of age in an enjoyable process from which an individualized and meaningful curriculum can be developed. TPBI begins with an understanding of the child's developmental skills,underlying developmental processes, learning style, and interaction patterns. This information, combined with knowledge about the child's interest and the family's goals for development, is used by a team that includes the parents and representatives from a variety of disciplines to create an intervention plan. Intervention implications are addressed across the cognitive, social-emotional, communication and language, and sensorimotor domains, with the intent that early childhood education team will integrate all developmental areas. Examples are provided throughout the text to illustrate how the various strategies can be implemented and how the recommended approaches relate to recommendations in other developmental domains. To assist in implementation of a play-based model, suggestions and examples are offered in each chapter of what interventions might look like for children with varying levels of ability. Recommendations are made for home, center, and school environments. (Chapters include references.)
